Perseus and Andromeda was one of a series of six large-scale mythological paintings commissioned from Titian by King Philip II of Spain, that were each to represent a scene from The Metamorphoses, an immensely popular epic poem by the Roman poet Ovid.

In Greek mythology, Andromeda was the daughter of the Ethiopian King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia. Perseus and Andromeda were said to have left their eldest son, Perses, in Ethiopia where he founded the line of Persian kings. These family connections to a great hero, and through him to Zeus, were common in Greek lore. The sprawling family of Perseus and Andromeda gave legitimacy to the lands their descendants ruled stories of their heroic deeds.

Perseus and Andromeda is a 1622 painting by the Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens featuring the ancient Greek myth of Perseus and Andromeda after the former's defeat of the Gorgon. The paintings shows the Gorgon's reflection on Perseus' shield. The painting also shows Tobiano Pegasus, the goddess of glory over Perseus' head and several putti.

In a richly colored picture, there are two main characters – Perseus and Andromeda, as well as his faithful companion – the winged horse Pegasus, which  Cassiope, Queen of Ethiopia, boasted that she was more beautiful than the Nereids (or sea nymphs).

The hero Perseus, son of Jupiter and Danaë, sees Andromeda while flying over Aethiopia and falls in love with her. He asks her parents for permission to marry her if he is able to save her; he subsequently kills the sea monster and rescues Andromeda.

On the way back to Seriphos Island, Perseus stopped in the kingdom of Ethiopia.

Perseus and Andromeda returned to Greece, where the old prophecy that Perseus would kill his grandfather eventually was fulfilled. In taking part in the games in Thessaly, Perseus threw a discus, accidentally hitting and killing Acrisius. At the end of their lives, Athena turned Perseus and Andromeda into constellations and placed them in the sky.
